7 Unique Date Night Ideas in Salt Lake City

Date night matters – it’s a chance to connect, create memories, and step away from routine. And if you’re looking for fun and interesting date night activities around Salt Lake City, it can be challenging to plan an evening that isn’t just “dinner and a movie”.

As I was putting this list together, I ran across a quote that really caught my attention:

“Make dedicated, nonnegotiable time for each other a priority, and never stop being curious about your partner. Don’t assume you know who they are today, just because you went to bed with them the night before. In short, never stop asking questions. But ask the right kind of questions.” ― John M. Gottman

That’s something I took into consideration when making this list of date ideas around Salt Lake. These are activities that are hands-on experiences where you can learn, create and explore together. Whether you’re in a new relationship or married for years, these activities help create connection through shared experiences.

1. Learn to Cook Together at Salt Lake Culinary Education

Take your date night to the next level with a hands-on cooking class. At SLICE, you’ll spend 3 hours learning new skills and creating a restaurant-quality meal together, and you don’t need any cooking experience because they accommodate all skill levels. Each class provides hands-on cooking instruction from expert chefs and ends with you enjoying the meal you’ve prepared. Class pricing varies depending on menu, but most date night cooking classes are priced at $210 per couple. Classes include all ingredients and equipment.

Take a culinary journey and explore a wide array of tastes, traditions, and techniques. Each class is designed around a unique theme, from seasonal ingredients to regional cuisines. The classes fill up fast, so book early to get your preferred date.

“Funnest Valentine’s date night. The food was delicious and the chefs were all so kind and helpful. Will definitely be back!” – McKelle C.

Located in downtown Salt Lake City, Red Flower Studios offers both hands-on sessions where you create your own piece and interactive demonstrations where you learn about the craft’s history and science. The instructors guide you through the whole process, making it accessible and fun if you’ve never done it before.

3. Paint Ceramics at Color Me Mine

Head to Sandy for a relaxing evening of ceramic painting. Color Me Mine offers date night specials every other Friday starting at 5 p.m. with half-price studio fees. You both start by choosing a ceramic piece to paint, and they have lots of pieces to pick from. Then choose your colors, and sit down at a work station to let your creativity flow. It’s a laid-back activity that allows for conversation while creating something personal that you can take home with you.

For an elegant afternoon, book a tea service at The Grand America’s Lobby Lounge. Each person receives their own pot of loose-leaf tea, along with tea sandwiches and fresh-baked pastries from the hotel’s pastry chefs. Through February 17, they’re offering a special Valentine’s tea service featuring seasonal treats and heart-shaped sweets.

6. Volunteer at Best Friends Animal Society

For animal lovers, spending time helping pets at Best Friends Animal Society makes for a meaningful date. Located in Sugar House, the center offers various volunteer opportunities – from helping with animal care to reading to homeless pets. You’ll need to complete an application and training first, but it’s a rewarding way to spend time together while making a difference.

7. Create Custom Candles at The Wick Lab

Design and pour your own candles in this hands-on experience. You’ll start by exploring their wall of 100 fragrances, choosing up to three scents to blend. Then, you’ll work with experienced chandlers (candle makers) to set the wick, mix fragrances, and pour your 100% soy wax candle. While your creation needs time to set (pickup is recommended for another day), the process of selecting scents and making the candle together is part of the fun.
