Ingredients:
1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup milk
1-2 teaspoons red food coloring
1 quart oil for frying
Instructions:
- Heat oil in deep-fryer to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, white sugar, baking powder, cocoa powder, and salt.
- Mix in butter until crumbly. Stir in egg, milk, and red food coloring until smooth. Knead lightly, then turn out onto a lightly floured surface.
- Roll or use a small cookie scoop to shape dough into 1/2 to 1 inch balls.
- Carefully drop doughnuts into hot oil, a few at a time. Do not overcrowd pan or oil may overflow. Fry, turning once, for 3 minutes or until golden. Drain on paper towels.
- While still warm, roll in topping of your choice (powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, cocoa powder, melted chocolate, etc.) or keep plain.
